February is Black History Month, an opportunity for a focused, intentional and elevated reflection and recognition of Black history and achievement. Each year, Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Black communities in Canada, listen to their stories, and learn more about their history and contributions to Canadian society.
For 2025, Black History Month’s theme is: “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.” This month provides us all the opportunity to celebrate the diversity and achievements of Black people in Canada. However, it is also a time to reflect on Canada’s painful history and the distinct challenges that Black people in Canada continue to face in their daily lives, such as systemic barriers, racism and discrimination.
In honour of Black History Month, David Lam Library has the following titles on display. They feature Black authors, or stories about Black people’s experiences. Some of the titles included in our display are:
– We don’t need permission: how Black business can change our world
– The antiracist business book: an equity-centered approach to work, wealth, and leadership
– Minding their own business: five female leaders from Trinidad and Tobago
– Learning to lead for transformation: an African perspective on educational leadership
– Pushing cool : big tobacco, racial marketing, and the untold story of the menthol cigarette
– Playing a new game: a Black woman’s guide to being well and thriving in the workplace
